Martin vs Lamar

Game Summary
The Lamar Vikings came to visit the Martin Warriors for the last game of the 2008 Season. Lamar had two district losses and the Warriors had one. Of course a win for the Warriors would mean a district championship, but a loss would mean a shared title with the Vikings.

The Warriors knew what was on the line and Chris Micheal who got the call to throw for Martin held the Viks scoreless in the first and the Martin bats went to work. Ryan Walker and Travis Yost hit singles, Tyler Wilhelm hit a double and Trey Thompson racked up a triple. Eric Jeske and Kyle Chatham, the DH, both got on base with Viking errors and Trey Kensing drew a walk. All told the Warriors put up three during the inning. In the top of the second Micheal sat the first two batters down with strike outs followed by a single. The fourth batter hit a line drive to short stop, Walker to take it to the bottom of the inning. In the second Jeske hit a double followed by Walker hitting his second single in as many innings and Trevor Slocum coming up with a single of his one. Thompson walked and the Warriors added 1 run. The first Viking hitter of the third inning hit a double but was left stranded when the next hitter hit to Wilhelm at first and the next two batters both had Ks. The Warriors went down in order in the third inning. The Vikings followed suit with a ground ball to Walker and a high pop up also to Walker followed by another K. In the bottom of the fourth Martin started out with walks by Jeske and Walker. They pulled a double steal and the third baseman missed the ball to try to tag Jeske so he scored. With two outs and Walker on third Thompson also drew a walk. Thompson pulled the Vikings into a run down with him between first and second and kept the play going long enough for Walker to score to make it 6 – 0 after four innings of play. Lamar once again went 1 – 2 – 3 with a ground ball to Wilhelm at first, a ground ball to Walker at short and another strike out. In the Warrior half of the inning Chatham was able to reach base with a little help from a Viking error but was left on base. In the sixth inning the top of the Lamar line up went down swinging for three more strike outs from Micheal. The Warriors got two quick outs in the sixth and then Slocum hit a single, Wilhelm and Thompson walked and Chatham and Dillon Dawson hit singles and Kensing was hit by a pitch. Martin added three insurance runs in the inning. In the seventh inning the first batter hit another line drive to Walker at short, the following batter hit a single and the next batter struck out swinging. Micheal then pitched to the next Viking and threw three straight strikes, the last one being a beautiful curve ball that dropped in for a strike.

Micheal faced 25 batters, issued 11 strike outs, no base on balls and no hit batsman.

This win brought the JV Warrior record to 18 – 3 and their District Record to 13 – 1 which earned them the 8-5A Junior Varsity District Championship.
