Martin vs Bowie

Game Summary
The first district match up for Martin vs Bowie was to occur on Tuesday, the 25th, but due to no umpires showing up, the game was moved to Wednesday, the 26th. This game was a defensive battle all the way for both teams. Shane Griffin pitched for the Warriors. In the 1st inning the Warriors got the Volunteers out 1-2-3 and the Volunteers did the same to the Warriors. The 2nd inning the Bowie pitcher, Heath Stuckey, led off and hit a high pop up that should have been caught by the second baseman, but was allowed to drop and Stuckey got to first on the error. The next batter flew out to Mike Chovanec at first base. Griffin had a great pickoff to Chovanec to get Stuckey out leading off of first and then struck out the 3rd batter of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Jordan Imhoff, Chase Brown and Daniel Garcia all walked. Tanner Hapeman went in to run for Garcia. Brian Ragira was up next and got of count of 1-2 and fouled one off. He took the next pitch moving out of the way, as it was a bit inside, and the field umpire ruled that he “went” and thus was struck out for the 1st out. Designated hitter, Jay Hiller came up next and hit a shot to the third baseman who made a great double play tagging third to get Brown out and throwing to first to get Hiller out. In the 3rd inning, Griffin struck out the first batter. The next batter hit a little blooper toward 3rd that Griffin fielded as he slid in front of it, but still made the throw to first and Chovanec made a great scoop to get the out. The next batter grounded out to Chovanec to end the top of the inning. The Warriors finally got a hit in the bottom of the 3rd as Chase Jensen hit to right center. Jensen stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. The next two batters struck out, but Jantzen Witte came through with a hit to left center and scored Jensen. He was left on base as Stuckey got another strike out. The 4th inning Griffin was on again striking out two and the other batter grounding out to Witte at short. The Warriors were also out three up and three down in the bottom of the 4th. In the 5th inning, Griffin struck out the first batter and the next batter reached base on an error to 3rd base. Ragira redeemed himself on the next batter by turning the double play throwing to Jensen at second and then Jensen throwing to Chovanec at first to end the top of the inning. Martin couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the 5th either, with two strikeouts and a fly out. The 6th inning was much the same with two batters grounding out to Ragira at third and one striking out. In the bottom of the 6th Chovanec led off with a great shot to the second baseman that was bobbled a bit and Chovanec hustled to get to first before the throw. Hunter Reinhardt went in to run for Chovanec and got to second on an error by the pitcher on a not so great throw to first trying to pick him off. Witte was up next and got a count of 3-0 and the Vols decided to change pitchers. Witte got the walk on the next pitch. Imhoff was up next and flew out to right field. Brown came to the plate and got one ball on him and Reinhardt and Witte both ran to steal the next base, moving them into scoring position. The Volunteer Coach decided to intentionally walk Brown at that time bringing up Garcia to bat. Garcia hit a deep fly to center field getting the sacrifice as Reinhardt tagged up and scored. Brown got a big lead off first trying to draw the throw to allow Witte to score, but the second baseman made a good throw to the catcher at home and Witte was tagged out at the plate for the final out of the inning. Many fans began to stand up as Griffin took the mound for the final inning showing support for him as he had a chance to make history with a no hitter. The first batter fouled a couple off and then hit a grounder to Chovanec at first who had no trouble making the out. Griffin got a full count on the next batter before getting the called third strike to put him out. The next batter got a count of 2-2 and then struck out on a called third strike giving Griffin the no hitter with 9 strikeouts! Congratulations Shane!
