Martin Warriors vs. El Paso Socorro Bulldogs
@ Christensen Stadium, Midland, TX
Game Summary
The Warriors came out slowly with no hits in the first two innings. Shane
Griffin was on the mound for Martin allowing no hits in the 1st inning with one
walk. The defense made the routine plays necessary for the three outs.
The Bulldogs scored in the 2nd inning with an error and two hits. Jake Mizell
led off in the 3rd inning with a nice hit to left center taking second and third
bases on the center fielder’s mishandling of the ball. Chase Brown’s
sacrifice fly to left center scored Mizell. Harrison Law reached base on a
single to right center and stole second base during Jantzen Witte’s at bat, but
was left on base as the short stop caught Witte’s hit for the third out.
Griffin struggled in the bottom of the 3rd with two walks but then came back to
strike out the third batter. Coach Culbertson decided to intentionally
walk the fourth batter to load the bases hoping for a double play, but the next
batter hit a double down the right field line scoring two and moving the last
walked batter to third base. The runner on third ended up scoring on a
pass ball. Griffin struck out the sixth batter to make two outs. The
seventh batter hit between first and second base and Will Keiser fielded the
ball, but slipped on the throw allowing the runner to reach base and another run
to score. Mizell made the final out on a fly ball to center field.
In the 4th inning Keiser and Brian Nephew both reached base on balls and Keiser
scored on Mizell’s hit to left field. The Warriors were not able to get
the other two runners home. The defense kept the Bulldogs from scoring in
the bottom of the 4th. Harrison Law was the only Warrior on base in the top of
the 5th. He stole second base and then reached third on an error and
scored on Witte’s sacrifice fly to right field. The Bulldogs got two on
base in the bottom of the 5th reaching on and error and a walk. The first
one scored on a fielder’s choice bringing the score to 6-3. In the 6th,
Jordan Imhoff reached base on a single with Tanner Hapeman going in to run for
him. Nephew hit into a double play. Michael Chovanec grounded out to the
second baseman ending the Warriors chances for scoring in the 6th. The
Bulldogs first batter in the 6th reached base on a hit to left center and scored
on a sacrifice fly to center field. The next batter up hit a foul ball
that Matthew Schimpf got to, but the El Paso coach was in the way, so he wasn’t
able to get the out. The umpires made a good call of interference for the
2nd out. Nephew cleanly fielded the next batters hit to him and made a
good throw to Schimpf at first for the final out. The Warriors were not
able to get a rally going in the final inning ending game 1 in a loss of 7-3.
