Martin - vs
Lamar -
Game Summary
The last district game of the season proved to be an exciting one against the
Lamar Vikings. The paper reported the game went to 10 innings, but it was
actually only 8! The 1st inning started off with what would have been a double
by Lamar’s Chris Arocha, but he failed to touch 1st base and thus was out when
pitcher Kevin Winter threw the ball to Tyler Martin at 1st base. Lamar was able
to get one runner home that reached base on an error and then scored on a hit to
left field. In the bottom of the inning, Harrison Law reached base on balls and
scored by stealing home when Jordan Imhoff drew the throw stealing second after
reaching base on an error by the third baseman. The Vikings were held scoreless
in the 2nd inning. Jacob Mizell hit a double in the bottom of the 2nd. The
Warriors executed the same running play as they did in the 1st inning with pinch
runner Shane Griffin drawing the throw stealing 2nd base allowing Mizell to
steal home. Neither team was able to score in the 3rd inning. In the top of the
4th, Winter struck all three batters out. Brian Nephew hit a single to left
field to lead off the bottom of the 4th and then was thrown out at 2nd on the
fielder’s choice by T. Martin. Martin was moved to second on Michael Chovanec’s
ground out to 3rd base and kept running to 3rd when the 3rd baseman threw to
1st. The 1st baseman overthrew 3rd base trying to get Martin out so Martin ran
home to score the third run. Lamar got two back-to-back hits in the top of the
5th but failed to get the runners home. The Warriors were out three up and three
down in the bottom of the 5th and gave the same to the Vikings in the top of the
6th. In the bottom of the 6th, Keiser reached base on a hit to short stop, but
was left hanging on base with no one able manufacture a hit to bring him home.
The Vikings rallied in the top of the 7th with a walked batter scoring on a
double to right field and then another score on a single to right field tying
the game up 3-3. Shane Griffin went to the mound in relief finishing off the
last two batters. Winter pitched a great game with 9 strike-outs. In the bottom
of the 7th, Chovanec hit a single to right field, reached 2nd on a pass ball and
then moved to 3rd on Mizell’s ground out to the short stop. Unfortunately, the
catcher tagged him out when the suicide squeeze attempt failed forcing an extra
inning. One Viking runner reached base on an error in the top of the 8th, but
was left on base. Keiser walked after two outs and then stole second base.
Imhoff hit to the short stop who bobbled the ball and Keiser ran home to score
the winning run. What a game! Warriors win by one run clinching the District
8-5A Championship title for 2007!
