Martin - vs
Weatherford -
Game Summary
The championship game of the Duncanville JV tournament pitted the Martin
Warriors against the Weatherford Kangaroos. The Warriors had a single from
Tanner Hapeman in the top of the first but were unable to score. The Kangaroos
came out swinging and were able to rack up four runs due to a couple of singles
and a little help from the Warriors. Weatherford tried to lay down a suicide
squeeze bunt for a fifth run but third baseman, Trevor Slocum robbed them when
he was able to catch the short pop up and tag the runner going home for an
unassisted double play to end the bleeding. The Warriors were determined to come
back in the second and were able to narrow the Roo lead to 4 – 3. Nathan
Harrison and Jay Hiller both got doubles and Eric Jeske got a single during the
second. During the bottom of the second the Kangaroos had a quick out when the
first batter hit to second baseman, Chase Jensen. The second Weatherford batter
walked only to be doubled off when he thought a ball was un-reachable by
centerfielder, Hunter Reinhardt only to have Reinhardt make the great catch and
throw a rocket back to Hiller at first to complete the double play. During the
third Jensen hit a single but the Warriors were not able to push any runners
across the plate. The Kangaroos hit a couple of singles during the inning but
did not score. Catcher, Harrison gunned down a Weatherford runner attempting to
steal second base and Jensen made a clean tag to complete the play. During the
Warrior half of the fourth Jeske hit his second single of the night but Martin
was not able to score once again. Weatherford’s first batter of the inning was
hit by a pitch and after two outs the runner was able to score when a teammate
hit a double. The Kangaroos were able to score another run during this inning to
make the score 6 – 3 Weatherford at the end of the fourth inning. The Warriors
weren’t ready to give it up quite yet. During the fifth Jensen hit a double and
Travis Breslin, Reinhardt and Harrison all hit singles and pushed three runners
across the plate to even it up. In the bottom of the inning Weatherford went
down in order. The Warriors started out with Jeske hitting his third single of
the game followed by a walk to Hiller, singles by Hapeman and Jensen and walks
to Trent Hunter and Reinhardt. The Warriors had already put up two during the
inning and the bases were loaded when Slocum took the sign to lay down a suicide
bunt. Jensen was almost to the plate when Slocum got the bunt down. The
Kangaroos had no chance of getting Jensen out and the pitcher turned to make a
throw to first when he realized that he probably wasn’t going to get that out
either and turned to find that Breslin was also going for the plate. The pitcher
tagged Breslin out aggressively for the first out of the inning. Harrison and
Chris Micheal both walked followed by a single from Jeske and a triple by
Hapeman. Before the top of the sixth was over the Warriors had added eight and
Weatherford was not able to answer with anything giving the Warrior the win and
the Tournament Championship.
