Martin   - vs L.D. Bell -

Game Summary
The season home opener was not the best of starts for the Varsity Warriors.  After several fielding errors and one hit by LD Bell scored three runs, catcher Zach Laster made a tremendous play at the plate on a throw from right fielder Jordan Imhoff.  In the process of putting the tag on the runner, Laster’s arm was broken. Chase Brown switched from center field to catcher and Jacob Mizell entered the game in center field.  Bell hit two more singles scoring one more to lead 4-0 in the top of the first inning.  The Warriors matched those four runs with four of their own with singles by Keiser, Imhoff and Brown. Chovanec and Witte both scored after reaching base on walks.  The Warriors defense settled down in the second with pitcher Shane Griffin striking out three.  In the bottom of the second, Chovanec drew a walk and stole second, but was thrown out at third on a double play by the catcher and third baseman.  Keiser also walked and scored on Nephew’s double to left center who reached third on Witte’s single.  Nephew was tagged out trying to steal home.  Both teams held each other to no score in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, the Blue Raiders scored two runs on two hits and a walk.  Kevin Winter entered the game in relief for Griffin.  The Warriors were unable to score in the bottom of the fourth, but held the Raiders in the top of the fifth.  Martin put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with Nephew reaching base on an error and Matt Schimpf walking.  Nephew scored on Harrison Law’s single up the middle and Schimpf scored on Brown’s single to left field tying the game 7-7.  The Warriors defense held the Raiders again in the top of the sixth.  Imhoff hit a double putting him in possible scoring position with only one out.  The Raiders opted to intentionally walk Nephew bringing up Witte with a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to scoring position.  Paul Gonzales entered the game to hit, but was out on a called strike out leaving the go ahead runners stranded.  Unfortunately, the Blue Raiders put three more runs on the board in the top of the seventh with two hits and a couple of fielding errors.  The Warriors got a couple of players on base on walks, but couldn’t get them home resulting in a disappointing loss of 10-7.
