Game Summary
The Freshmen Warriors run ruled and shut out the Lamar Vikings in their
last match up for the season to bring their overall record to 19 – 1 and their
district record to 11 – 0 with three games left in the season. Chris Micheal
retired the Vikings in order in the top of the first and although Travis Breslin
was able to hit a single up the middle the Warriors failed to score during the
first as well. Once again Micheal set them down in order in the second
including a diving stop by second baseman Tanner Hapeman who then had to hurry
the throw to Stewart Person at first who was able to make the scoop for the
third out of the inning. The Warriors put up three runs in the second with a
single from Chase Jensen, a triple from Person and a double from Trevor Slocum.
The Vikings finally got on base during the third inning with one hit, a walk and
two fielder’s choices, but the Warriors defense kept them from scoring. The
Warriors once again added three with a double by Breslin followed by a double
from Dylan Rucker that hugged the third baseline into left field. Hunter
Reinhardt was walked and scored when Person reached on an error by the Vikings
left fielder making the score 6 – 0 at the end of three. In the fourth the
Vikings once more went down in order and the Warriors once again added three
runs. Tanner Hapeman led off with a single down the gut followed by a single
from Warrior catcher, Daniel Garcia. With one out Rucker hit back at the
pitcher who tried to get Taylor Peddicord, who was running for Garcia, out at
the plate by Peddicord eluded the tag putting Rucker on with a fielder’s
choice. Rucker was able to score when Jensen reached on a Viking error. During
the top of the fifth one Viking reached on the only Warrior error of the evening
but was left stranded when Micheal struck out the next batter. Going into the
bottom of the fifth the Warriors needed one run to end the game under the run
rule. Person started it off with a double. With 1 out Hapeman got on after the
Viking catcher dropped the third strike and Hapeman used his speed to beat out
the throw to first. Person got thrown out at home plate trying to end the game,
but Garcia hit a single scoring Hapeman and ending the game. Micheal upped his
record to 7 – 0 facing 18 batters, issuing 1 walk and allowing 1 hit. Micheal
struck out 5.
