Martin - 9 vs Arlington - 7
Game Summary
What a game!! The freshmen teams
from Martin and Arlington had to play an eighth inning to determine who was
going to win their second district match up and the Warriors came out on top
once again. Tanner Hapeman led off the first with a single to left center
followed by walks by Travis Breslin, Jay Hiller and Kyle Blackwell. Blackwell’s
walk gave him the first RBI scoring Hapeman and Hunter Reinhardt racked up the
second RBI when he hit a shot over the short stops head into shallow left field
sending Breslin home. During the bottom of the first Dylan Rucker made the
first two batters hit right back to him and he threw them out easily at first
base to Stewart Person. The third batter walked and the fourth batter hit a
shot to Reinhardt in right field. The runner that started on first tried to
make it to third but Reinhardt had other plans. He threw from right field all
the way to third and Breslin put the tag down on the runner. Definitely an ESPN
moment. The second inning saw three strike outs for the Warriors. Once again
in the bottom of the inning Rucker had the first two batters hit right back to
him and he once again completed the plays to first base. The next two batters
hit singles and scored one run for the Colts. Rucker was able to get out of the
inning and strand a runner with a strike out. With one out in the third Breslin
walked followed by Jay Hiller hitting a shot to the third baseman who was not
able to get the ball to the first basemen without pulling him off the bag. With
two outs, Reinhardt hit a ball to centerfield that was dropped giving Reinhardt
2 RBIs. Rucker retired the side in order making the score 4 – 1 after three.
Despite Chase Jensen hitting a single and Eric Jeske drawing a walk the Warriors
were not able to add to their lead in the fourth, but the Warriors held the
Colts scoreless that inning as well with two Ks and a pop up to short stop,
Blackwell. In the fifth Daniel Garcia reached on an error, Breslin hit a single
up the middle and both scored on Rucker’s double to left center. Jensen hit
another single but was once again stranded. The first batter for the Colts got
on due to a Warrior error followed by a home run scoring two. They were able to
get two more runners on with walks, but the defense came through and kept the
Warriors up with a score of 7 – 3. During the sixth inning the Warriors were
unable to score and left Garcia, who had reached with a walk, and Breslin, who
had his second single, stranded. The Colts were once more able to score 2 runs
in the sixth and had the bases loaded with no outs when the batter hit to
Breslin at third, who immediately gunned it into Garcia at the plate to get the
force and lead runner. The next batter missed the ball on a classic squeeze
play and Garcia got the runner coming home with ease. Two batters later Person,
who had come in as relief, got the third out with a strike out. 7 – 5 Warriors
after six innings. The Warriors once again went down in order in the seventh
inning and the Colts again scored two to tie the game at 7 all at the end of 7.
The Colts thought that the momentum had swung their way and their cheer before
the inning was “BEAT MARTIN”. Well the Warriors weren’t going to lie down
without a fight. Jeske started it out with a single down the gut followed by a
double by Hapeman which scored Jeske. Hapeman stole home on a wild pitch a few
batters later to make it 9 – 7 Warriors going into the bottom of the eighth.
The first Colt batter flew out to Jeske in left field, second batter flew out to
Hapeman in center and after two harmless singles the fifth batter flew out to
Reinhardt in right once again making the Warriors victorious over the Colts.
Rucker got the win and Person the save.
