Martin - 15 vs Cedar Hill - 5
Game Summary
Despite temperatures in the
fifties and howling winds, the Warrior freshmen team handled the Cedar Hill
Longhorns without a snag. In the top of the first inning Daniel Garcia had a
stand up triple and scored when Kyle Blackwell grounded out to the short stop to
put the first run on the board. Josh Bragg retired the Longhorns in order in
the bottom of the first. Hunter Reinhardt got the second inning off with a bang
when he scored on an in the park home run. Jay Hiller walked and pinch runner,
Ian Johnston scored with two outs when Trevor Slocum hit a single to left
field. Cedar Hill was once more scoreless. During the third the Warriors were
able to add 4 runs with singles by Blackwell, Reinhardt, Chase Jensen and Eric
Jeske. Tanner Hapeman and Hiller were both able to reach with their second walk
for the evening. During the bottom of the third the Longhorns scored three runs
and would have scored a fourth run if the defense hadn’t made a play at home
with awesome precision. A Longhorn hit a ball out to deep left field and a
runner was trying to score from first when leftfielder, Jeske fired the ball to
his cutoff man, Slocum who threw to Jensen who zipped it into Garcia at the
plate who got the tag down for the second out. Cedar Hill failed to score any
more runs that inning. The Warriors once more came out slugging away in the
fourth. Dylan Rucker got a triple and Jensen and Hapeman had singles. The
Warrior batters once again showed patience at the plate and racked up walks by
Reinhardt, Hiller, Slocum, Garcia and Blackwell. Martin was able to add 6 runs
to their total making the run rule a possibility and with the ghastly weather
all the fans were hoping for an early conclusion to the game. The Longhorns
added two runs in the bottom of the fourth making the score 13 – 5 after four
innings of play. In the fifth inning Jensen hit his third single for the night
and Jeske took the 10th Warrior walk. Both Jensen and Jeske crossed
home when Hapeman hit a hard fly ball that the right fielder could not handle
once the ball got up in the swirling winds to make the score 15 – 5 going into
the bottom of the fifth. The Warrior hopes of a run rule rested on closer,
Johnston who faced four Longhorns striking out 2, giving up one hit and holding
the Longhorns scoreless. This win brings Bragg’s record to 5 – 0, the team’s
overall record to 16 – 1 and our district record to 8 – 0.
