Game Summary
On a night when all three
Warriors teams faced their cross-town rival, The Arlington Colts, the freshmen
game was the only close battle. The Arlington ace, Josh Stieger and Chris
Michael for the Warriors faced off in a pitchers’ dual. During the first four
innings the Colts had 2 hits, three Colts reached on walks and 1 Colt was sent
to first due to catcher interference but no Colt crossed the plate. During
these innings Michael struck out three, Trevor Slocum made three snags at third
base to throw the batters out at first. Warrior second baseman, Tanner Hapeman
fielded two balls and also completed the plays to first while Michael grabbed
two balls hit back to the mound and threw the runners out at first as well.
Shortstop, Kyle Blackwell also took a turn throwing an Arlington Colt out at
first during these four innings. Warrior first baseman, Stewart Person
completed all these plays, even as he had to scoop up a ball thrown low. Person
also backhanded a hard hit ball to first to make an unassisted out. Hapeman
reached with his blazing speed on a dropped third strike and Travis Breslin and
Blackwell each had a walk in the first inning but the Warriors were not able to
push anyone over the plate. Base on balls was awarded to Dylan Rucker, Person
and Taylor Peddicord in consecutive innings but the Warriors failed to score
during these innings as well. During the fifth inning the Colts led off with a
walk followed by a single. The third Colt batter of the inning was thrown out
by Blackwell and the lead runner was caught off guard by Warrior catcher
Garcia. Garcia gunned down to shortstop, Blackwell and the runner made a break
for third. Blackwell easily threw him out to Slocum at third. Unfortunately
the next Colt hit a single scoring the first run of the game. Michael was able
to get out of the inning with a pop up to Person leaving a Colt stranded once
again. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the fifth with a double by Slocum
who scored two batters later when Garcia hit a single making the score 1 – 1.
In the top of the sixth the first batter flew out to Breslin in left field and
the next batter was thrown out by Hapeman to Person. Michael walked a Colt who
scored when the fourth batter of the inning hit a single. The score was now 2 –
1, Colts, but the Warriors decided that they were not going to lie down. The
bottom of the sixth started with a single by Blackwell followed by Reinhardt
being hit by a pitch and Rucker once again walking to load the bases. With one
out Slocum hit a single scoring Blackwell and Reinhardt was sent home after
interference. Hapeman reached on an error but was thrown out when Garcia hit
into a fielders choice, but Garcia brought Rucker home making the score 4 – 2
Warriors going into the seventh inning. Ian Johnston came in as relief in the
top of the seventh and threw 8 pitches which resulted in a Hapeman to Person
first out, Johnston to Person second out and the final Colt struck out to wrap
the game and make the evening successful for all three Warrior teams. Martin
Warriors – 3 games to Arlington Colts – 0 games. This win brings the Martin
freshmen’s record to 11 – 1 and district record 3 – 0. Michael got the win
which brings his record to 4 – 0 and Johnston got the save.
