Martin - 10 vs Monterey - 4
Game Summary
Game Two of the First Blank Classic pitted the Martin Warriors
against 2005 5A State Semi-Finalist Lubbock Monterey. Monterey had the
home field advantage and a vocal home crowd, but that didn't phase the Warriors.
Martin took an early lead in the first inning when Bryce Peterman reached on an
error and scored on Nate Karns single through the right side. The Warriors
added another run in the 3rd when Will Keiser led off with a single, advanced to
second on Shaun Garcia's sacrifice bunt, then scored on Zach Laster's single to
right. Martin erupted for three more runs in the fourth. Karns
was hit by a pitch, then Jordan Imoff doubled down the left field line to put
runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Brian Fite reached on an error
to load the bases, then Karns scored when Regan Dixon walked. The second
run of the inning scored when the third baseman booted Drew Huneycutt's
grounder, and the third run scored on a fielder's choice. Monterey rallied
for four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one.
Hanging onto a one run lead going into the seventh, the Warriors' bats came
alive. Keiser led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third
when Monterey's centerfielder robbed Garcia of extra bases with a diving catch
in left center. After Peterman walked, Zach Laster drilled a two-strike
pitch into the left centerfield gap scoring two runs. Imhoff's single to left
plated Laster, and Fites' single up the middle scored pinch runner Harrison Law.
Dixon's single to right center put runners at first and third, and heads up base
running allowed both runners to advance when the catcher made an errant throw to
the pitcher. Bryan Cox got the win on the mound for the Warriors, and
Brian Nephew was impressive in relief.
