Martin - 3 vs Coppell - 2
Game Summary
Its still early in the season, but we're starting to see a pattern
with the 2006 Martin Warriors. For the fourth time in as many games, the
Warriors won the contest in their final at bat, and it has been different
players coming up with the clutch hits each time. Playing six games in
five days would wreak havoc on most pitching staffs, but not this one.
After getting the win in relief on Friday night, Coach Culbertson turned once
again to sophmore left-hander Kevin Winter for the final game of the Tyde
Classic. Winter responded with an outstanding performance, scattering nine
hits over seven innings against a talented Coppell team for his second win of
the season. Coppell's biggest threat to take the lead came in the fifth
when they advanced a runner to third, but Martin's shortstop Bryce Peterman made
a diving stop of a screamer up the middle, and threw the runner out at first to
keep the Cowboys off the board. The score was tied 2-2 going into the
bottom of the seventh, and the partisan Martin crowd just knew what was about to
happen. Shaun Garcia led off with a walk, then Peterman reached
first when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed by the Coppell pitcher. Regan
Dixon followed with a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to second and third with
one out. Cleanup hitter Nate Karns then delivered the game winning hit
into centerfield scoring Garcia with the go ahead run. The Warriors
celebrated as they had just captured the Tyde Classic championship by running
the table with a 5-0 tournament record against a tough field, extending their
win streak to six games as they head into district play next week at Cedar Hill.
Congratulations Warriors!!
