Martin - 5   vs  Newman Smith - 6

Game Summary

In a early season match up of two of the top teams in the state, Martin came out on the short end of a 6-5 contest with Carrollton Newman Smith.  The game also featured a marquee match up on the mound between two of the top pitchers in the state...Martin's Nathan Karns against Newman Smith's Preston Claiborne.  Newman Smith drew first blood in the bottom of the first, pushing across a single run on a sacrifice fly to center.  Martin responded with two runs in the top half of the 2nd inning.  Bryce Peterman reached on a hit-by-pitch, and Kyle Swearingen followed by homering to left center on the first pitch he saw from Claiborne.  After seeing Smith tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Shaun Garcia got things going again for the Warriors with a double to the base of the right center field wall in Martin's half of the third.  Garcia scored on Zach Laster's sharp single up the middle to put Martin back on top.  Laster was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate.  Smith rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a short-lived 5-3 lead.  Martin once again responded to tie the game in the top of the fourth with Brian Fite and Peterman collecting key hits.  Smith scored the decisive go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth.  Neither team could manage any offense in the fifth, and after a lengthy discussion between the umpires and coaches, the game was called due the "phantom" time limit.
